Family Games - Fun And Frolic At Home

Posted by Kids and Teens in Your Family, Games

Most families have favorite games that they have shared together over the years. When I was a child, my family were very keen on family games. It wasn’t just the lack of other forms of entertainment that made us play them, we loved them anyway. Even if there had been more TV channels and computer games, we still would have got the family games out of the cupboard.

I think that kids miss out today by not having that quality time with their parents and siblings. It’s a great bonding exercise and it teaches kids to be graceful in victory and defeat. So many activities are solitary today, and kids have entire home entertainment systems in their bedrooms. Families are fragmented throughout the house.

My father taught my brother and I to play chess from a very young age. Chess games and chequers were part of our Sunday afternoon routine. We also liked to play card games for matches or pennies. We’d play pontoon or gin rummy. Board games were another sort of family games we played a lot. Our favorites were monopoly, snakes and ladders and cluedo. Family games of monopoly could go on for days.

Outdoor activities were also popular with my family. We liked to go to the local park and play a game of cricket, rounders or kick a soccer ball around. There were tennis courts too, which we made use of. The weather in the UK isn’t always kind though, so indoor family games were very important.

When my own children were little, my husband and I carried on the family games tradition. They liked board games too, and we played the old favorites. My adult son still plays The Simpsons version of monopoly with his girlfriend. We also liked to play Risk, the war strategy game. Pictionary is still one of the games we enjoy. We have only recently got Twister in our house. It’s certainly good for keeping you agile and it’s great fun.

Many games now have computer versions, such as Risk. I’d rather smell the board and hold the figures in my hand. Everything has to be on a screen now. I think we assume that kids won’t want to play family games the old fashioned way. You can also play chess and cards on the computer.

If more families spent time together, perhaps they’d stay together. I have many happy memories of sitting round the table with loved ones, playing family games. It’s great for stress levels, as long as you don’t mind losing!

Induce Learning Games For Kids Without Delay

Posted by Kids and Teens in Games

The requirements for children entering kindergarten are becoming more and more challenging. Children are expected to know more than their parents did when they enter the school system. Many parents struggle to teach their children what they need to, and some turn to learning games for kids for this purpose.

Learning games for kids are often great fun for both the parent and the child. Children learn differently than adults do, and many games are geared towards learning while keeping things fun. Colors, rhyme, counting, and letters are main themes to learning games for kids. One of the most common early games geared towards children is Candyland. This game teaches simple color recognition and counting skills.

There is also a large amount of memory games that will help your children sharpen your memory skills. These are also extremely popular learning games for kids. I can tell you on any given day, my four-year-old beats me at Memory.

You might also want to add movement and sound to learning games for kids by making up some of your own. Games like musical chairs are timeless, and you can make up just about any game using the same basic idea. Children learn though music, and it helps keep them sharp and open to learning.

When shopping for learning games for kids, simply look at the box. There is always an age recommendation. This isn’t a hard and fast number, but it is a good guide to tell you if your child is ready for that particular game or not. Some children can do games that are in advance of their age, while others need to stick to the guidelines.

The most important part of learning games for kids is that time is put aside for playing the game, and that they learn more than colors, numbers, shapes, and like subjects. Learning games for kids also teach politeness, good sportsmanship, taking turns, and how to lose without whining or throwing a fit. These are all great lessons for any child, and sometimes, for the adults too.

No matter what game you choose, you are sure to build precious memories with your child. Learning games for kids are meant for learning, but they mean so much more. Perhaps the most important lesson they will get is that they are worth your time, and doing things with family is important. This is a lesson every child should learn at an early age, and it should be reinforced on a daily basis.

Carnival - The Place For Fun-n-Frolic

Posted by Kids and Teens in Games

It is that time of the year again. The time of year when the evenings begin to get darker earlier and the kids return to school. That also means that it is time for the local carnivals and fairs to take place. In my hometown, we have several different and large carnivals that go on. People flock for the fattening and yummy foods and entertainment, and kids waste their allowances on the carnival games. Carnival games are famous for giving out small and generic prizes that people will spend entirely too much money to win. My son was determined to prove his worthiness to his girlfriend by winning her a huge stuffed animal. He ended up spending twice the amount of money that it would have cost him to purchase one in the first place. But, when he won, she threw her arms around him and squealed. He smiled widely, knowing that his mission had been accomplished and knowing that every penny he had spent was well worth it.

Some carnival games are meant to be easy while others seem to be almost impossible. I swear that some of those milk bottles that you are supposed to knock over, are actually glued together. The live goldfish that you can win at some carnival games all seem to pass on within a few days or weeks. My personal favorites are the carnival games that you can win some sort of food. I like when you can put money on a certain number and watch the spinning wheel decide where it will land. Perhaps you may win a basket of fruit or some giant candy bars. I just hate when the kids win something stupid and pointless that will just end up being thrown out or cluttering up the house. I get a kick out of the game attendants standing in front of the carnival games that call out to passer-bys hoping to lure someone in to play their game.

I’ve never been one to play many of the carnival games. When I was a child, I’d annoy my mother by playing carnival games that I could win goldfish, and brought bags of them home with me. She would always be thrilled about that. I was more interested in spending my allowance money on the yummy food that was plentiful and riding on the rides. Unless there was something to be won that I just had to have, carnival games didn’t impress me too much. They haven’t changed over the years, as my kids play the same carnival games that existed when I was their age. I think that some of the leftover prizes are still there to be won.
